You get a price before we start. It does not change when the truck arrives.
Meet the San Marcos Team Behind Mainspring Garage Door Co.
Our San Marcos crew shows up in the same trucks, wearing the same uniforms, with the same goal: fix it right the first time, tell you the flat price before we start, and stand behind the work. We’re not a call center with subcontractors. These are the people who answer when you call (760) 645-8680, who pull into your driveway in Discovery Hills or Twin Oaks Valley, and who sign their name to the 90-Day Done Right Promise on every invoice.
Our People
Carl Dutton, Owner
I started this company in 1984, back when San Marcos was mostly avocado groves and two-lane roads. Forty-two years later, I’m still answering the phone at odd hours and still driving out when a spring snaps on a Sunday. I named the business Mainspring because that single coil carries the entire weight of a garage door, and one failure brings everything to a halt. Same principle here. One weak link in a crew, one shortcut on an install, and the whole job fails. I’ve trained every technician personally under our K.E.Y.S. code: Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it. I live in San Elijo Hills with my wife and two rescue dogs. On weekends you’ll find me fixing neighbors’ doors for free or arguing with my smoker about brisket timing.
Mike R., Lead Technician
Mike joined us in 2017 after eight years running his own handyman business in Vista. He got tired of chasing checks and wanted a shop that guaranteed his paycheck and backed his work. He’s factory-certified on LiftMaster, Genie, and Chamberlain openers, but his real specialty is torsion spring systems on older Wayne Dalton doors, the kind with the anchored cones that most younger techs have never seen. Last March he diagnosed a cracked cable drum on a 1986 Raynor in Lake San Marcos that two other companies had misidentified as a motor failure. Mike keeps a fishing rod in his truck and hits Dixon Lake when the bass are biting. He’ll talk your ear off about line weights if you let him.
Sandra K., Senior Installer
Sandra came over from a commercial door outfit in Escondido in 2019, bringing with her a certification in wind-load-rated systems and a tolerance for San Marcos summer heat that the rest of us envy. She handles our new-door installations from Rancho Coronado to Santa Fe Hills, and she’s particular about header framing and side-room clearances in ways that prevent callbacks six months later. Sandra grew up in a house with a broken garage door that her dad never fixed, so she treats every install like it’s the door she wished she’d had as a kid. She coaches a U-14 girls’ soccer team and has a strict no-coffee-after-10-a.m. rule that she violates constantly.
Darnell J., Service Coordinator
Darnell is the live voice you get when you call (760) 645-8680 at 11 p.m. on a holiday weekend. He’s been with us since 2021, and before that he dispatched for a plumbing company, so he knows every trick to get a technician to your door fast when a spring breaks and your car is trapped inside. He keeps a whiteboard in the office with every active job, every part needed, and every customer’s name spelled correctly, which matters more than you’d think. Darnell is the one who reminds us to apply the senior and veteran discounts before we quote, and he’s caught more pricing errors than I care to admit. He makes his own hot sauce and leaves bottles in the break room with warning labels that underestimate the heat.
Tomás V., Apprentice Technician
Tomás started with us in 2024 through a trade program at Palomar College, and he’s already running solo on cable replacements and roller swaps in the San Marcos Creek District. He’s working toward his torsion spring certification, which means Mike shadows him on every high-tension job until we’re both confident. Tomás grew up watching his grandfather repair appliances in Oceanside, and he brings that same patience to explaining what’s actually broken to customers who’ve been told they need a full door replacement for a $200 fix. He commutes from Vista on a motorcycle that he’s rebuilt twice. His toolbox is organized with a precision that makes the rest of us look sloppy.
One Standard, Every Job
Every person on this page works under the same written promise: the 90-Day Done Right Promise. If something we installed or repaired isn’t right, we come back. No paperwork to file, no manager to escalate, no argument about whether it was “normal wear.” It’s printed on every invoice because I sign it myself.
Our trucks carry the same inventory whether we’re headed to San Marcos or one of our other twelve service areas: springs, cables, drums, rollers, and openers from all eight major brands. Most jobs finish in one visit because we don’t believe in making you wait for parts we should have brought.
The price you agree to before we start is the price on the bill. No surprises. That’s been the rule since 1984, and it’s not changing because some software made adding fees easier.
When you call (760) 645-8680, you’ll reach Darnell or another live person, not a menu tree. Nights, weekends, holidays, it doesn’t matter. Someone who knows the schedule and the technicians will pick up. That’s not a marketing claim. It’s how we’ve operated for forty-two years, and it’s how we’ll keep operating as long as I’m running this shop.
